The spring issue of Fresh magazine came out in March, just in time for Island gardeners to start seriously digging around in the soil. To encourage people who have never gardened to give it a try, I wrote a piece for this issue called Plant a Salad (page 22). Salt of the Earth (page 26) discusses a foodie’s view on the new Health Canada guidelines for sodium intake. As always, this issue is packed full of wonderful recipes, including BC Seafood and Grilled Vegetable Salad, the cover recipe and part of the Spring Forward article, and Pepperoni Pita Pizza, a quick, easy alternative to take out in the article Fast-Food Fixes From Home. Here’s the link the flip-through version. Check out the great cover on the January/February 2014 issue of Yam Magazine! I had so much fun writing About Your Face in this issue. I interviewed experts in the anti-aging field — and I even got to try out some of the treatments! Find out what I discovered on page 58. Then, on page 80, see which books I read for Bookmarks.

The November/December issue of Yam magazine is gorgeous and full of the festive spirit, from decorating ideas, recipes, and glittering gowns to a great gift guide and clever wrapping tips. My contributions to this issue include, A New Look at an Old Flame is all about fireplace renovations (page 44). Then, on page 78, In Person: Beyond the Public Eye is an interview with CTV and CFAX frontman Bruce Williams on using profile as a force for good in the community. Lastly, Bookmarks, on page 96 features reviews of Khaled Hosseini’s And the Mountains Echoed, Linwood Barclay’s A Tap on the Window, and Cocktail Culture: Recipes and Techniques from Behind the Bar by Shawn Soole and Nate Caudle, two of Victoria’s bartending super stars.

The winter issue of Fresh magazine was released in December and is available for as long as copies last at any Thrifty Foods location on Vancouver Island and the Lower BC Mainland (www.thriftyfoods.com). As always, you’ll find some excellent recipes. My favourites in this issue? The Festive Winter Fruit Flan on page 20 and the Pan-Seared Scallops with White Wine Shrimp Sauce on page 31.
